General Description:

A Heavy-Duty Equipment Operator will primarily operate vehicles requiring a Class A Commercial Driver's License with Air-brake endorsement. These vehicles will range in size and weight class and include Heavy Equipment Haulers, Tractor Trailers, Triaxle Dump Trucks, Flatbeds, Light and Medium Duty Wreckers, etc. This position is physical in nature and will require heavy lifting on a consistent basis. Minor mechanical work will be required; removal of drive-shafts, caging brakes, etc. This is an essential position within the Authority requiring overtime and attendance during all city or PPA declared emergencies.

Principal Duties:

  • Recovery of inoperable vehicles, major accidents, Live Stopped vehicles, safety tows, and any type of assistance requiring heavy duty equipment.
  • Ensure all equipment, parts, and mechanical functions are always in proper working order.
  • Assist the Authority in ordering new and/or replacement equipment needed for recovery work.
  • Heavy duty service is provided for PPA, Philadelphia Police Department and/or State Police.
  • Assist in training with light duty trucks and CDL training. 
  • Performs other job-related duties as required

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent driving skills for combination towing and recovery work.
  • Adequate knowledge of towing procedures, mechanical skills, not limited to tractors, trailers, forklifts, backhoes and other heavy equipment.
  • Geographical knowledge of the city, bridge clearances, and weight limits.

Minimum Acceptable Training, Experience, and Education:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • One year experience operating a tow vehicle
  • Required Certification: CDL Class A with air brakes
  • Required to have fifth wheel and manual restrictions removed within one year of hire date. 
  • Required to obtain hazmat and tanker endorsements within the first 18 months of hire date.
  • Preferred qualifications: experience operating various types of heavy equipment. Or any equivalent combination of acceptable education, training, and experience.

Working Hours: This is a 24-hour operation. The work will consist of 40 or more hours per week. Most of the work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.

Selection Process:

  • 40% - ASSESSMENT TEST, (COMPUTERIZED)
  • 40% - ORAL INTERVIEW,
  • 10% - ATTENDANCE,
  • 10% - LATEST ANNUAL PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

APPLICANTS WHO HAVE AT LEAST TEN (10) YEARS OF SERVICE WILL HAVE FOUR (4) POINTS ADDED TO THEIR TOTAL SCORE.
