Job Responsibilities:

This position is responsible for conducting field underwriting services in accordance with company and departmental goals, objectives, and guidelines, which will enhance profitable Underwriting results. 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITY

Examine documents to determine degree of risk from such factors as applicant financial standing, and value and condition of property.

Make underwriting decisions in compliance with departmental procedures, company guidelines, binding limitations, reinsurance restrictions, and Texas Department of Insurance regulations.

Make decisions regarding risk selection and rate promulgation to place the company in the best position for profitability.

Operate under, and abide by, the TFBIC’s “Safety Services Procedures” and the Texas Department of Insurance, division of Loss Control regulations.

Evaluate safety activities and Safety/Loss Control programs for effectiveness and completeness.

Conduct on-site surveys, safety consultations, and/or safety counseling as requested by Home Office Underwriting and complete all necessary forms according to established procedures.

Maintain a file to document safety services and loss control information provided to policyholders, including a chronological log of activities.

Complete the FAA Part 107 sUAS Certification process and maintain active certification status throughout employment.

Communicate Underwriting decisions to agents, applicants, and insureds including granting binding authority to agents on certain risks when appropriate.

Evaluate the possibility of losses due to catastrophe or excessive insurance.

Decrease the value of a policy when risk is substandard and specify applicable endorsements or apply rating to ensure safe profitable distribution of risks, using reference materials.

Review company records to determine amount of insurance in force on single risk or group of closely related risks within a five-by-five mile radius of subject risk.

Authorize reinsurance of policy when risk is high.

Assist in training Underwriters.

Participate in company administered self-improvement courses.

Report any special problem(s) involving agency force, workflow delay of two or more days, and correspondence from the Texas Department of Insurance and other regulatory agencies to the assigned Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager.

Report, in writing, to the assigned Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager any recommended changes in TFB guidelines and procedures.

Participate in any special projects or research activities as assigned.

Communicate with employees of other departments regarding transactions related to Underwriting.

Comply with the Certified Fleet Operator requirements of the Company Driving and Safety Policy.

Other duties as assigned.


Job Qualifications:

MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education and experience that meets the following:

    Four-year degree from an accredited college or university.

    Experience as an Underwriter or comparable insurance experience preferred.

Basic understanding of commercial and residential construction practices preferred.

Knowledge of basic computer applications, especially Microsoft Office Suite.

Strong interpersonal verbal skills, both face-to-face and over the phone.

Ability to make determinations regarding the acceptability of a risk and clearly communicate your decisions to the agent, in-house underwriters, and policyholders.

Ability to plan, organize, manage one’s time and complete detailed work independently or in a team environment.

Valid Texas driver’s license and driving record at the time of hire which would not place the employee on probation, or disqualify the employee from Certified Fleet Operator Status, under the company Driving and Safety Policy.

Occasional ladder use.

Occasional lifting and moving items weighing up to 30 lbs.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Occasional long, irregular work hours.

Travel, as required. 

Some overnight travel.

Work to be conducted in an office environment owned or leased by company.
