Summary

The Medical Assistant at Sunshine Community Health Center is a vital member of our medical team, playing a key role in providing equitable, timely, and evidence-based care. This position is responsible for offering direct clinical support to both the Medical and Behavioral Health teams and individuals seeking health services. Operating within the framework of a patient-centered home, the Medical Assistant adopts a team-based and trauma-sensitive approach to ensure the delivery of compassionate and effective healthcare services. The Medical Assistant participates in organization-wide compliance and quality standards. Our Medical department is dedicated to fostering continuous partnerships with communities, the broader healthcare team, and local organizations. At Sunshine Community Health Center, healthcare is administered with a commitment to continuity and comprehensive efforts to enhance the overall well-being of the individuals we serve.

This position supports both Medical and Behavioral Health functions, with specific workflows defined in department-specific documentation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical Support — Provide direct clinical support to the Medical and Behavioral Health teams, including assistance with patient examinations, taking vital signs, and administering medications as directed.
  • Patient-Centered Care — Embrace and implement a patient-centered home model, ensuring that care is delivered in a manner that respects the unique needs and preferences of each individual.
  • Team Collaboration — Work collaboratively within a team-based healthcare model, fostering effective communication and coordination with other members of the Medical, Behavioral Health, and support staff.
  • Trauma-Sensitive Approach — Implement trauma-sensitive practices in all aspects of patient interaction and care delivery, creating a safe and supportive environment for individuals seeking health services.
  • Partnership Building — Actively engage in continuous partnerships with communities, local healthcare organizations, and other stakeholders to enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of health services.
  • Health Education — Assist in providing health education to patients and their families, empowering them to actively participate in their healthcare and make informed decisions.
  • Administrative Duties — Perform administrative tasks, including maintaining accurate patient records and supporting the efficient functioning of the healthcare facility.
  • Participate in the SCHC Quality Assurance program.
  • Maintain compliance with safety requirements.
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance.
  • Participate in improvement measures for patient outcomes and satisfaction, clinical workflows, and work environment satisfaction.
  • Behavioral Health Support Duties, as assigned and defined by department workflows:
    • Assist in preparing for psychiatric clinics.
    • Room patients for psychiatric patient visits.
    • Take vitals for patients being seen by a psychiatric provider.
    • Draw labs or get EKGs, as needed or indicated.
    • Assist in faxing prescriptions.
    • Provide administrative support to psychiatric and Behavioral Health providers.
  • Perform other duties as reflected within the scope of practice based on credentials and assigned Medical or Behavioral Health workflows.

Education and/or Experience

Graduation from high school or equivalent is required. Graduation from a medical assistant training program, equivalent schooling, or on-the-job training may be accepted at the discretion of the Chief Nursing Officer or LPN III. Medical certification or licensure is required for MA II and MA III. EMT II/III or paramedic experience may be accepted toward qualification. A minimum of two years of experience in the healthcare field and current CPR certification are preferred.

To ensure the health of our community, patients, and staff, SCHC requires proof of completed vaccine series or serologic test results for MMR, Varicella, Pertussis, and Hepatitis B, as well as TB screening, prior to employment.
