SUMMARY:

Palliative care volunteers provide non-clinical support to individuals with life-limiting illnesses and their families. Volunteers enhance quality of life through companionship, emotional support, and assistance with non-medical needs. Volunteers do not provide clinical care or perform tasks requiring medical training or licensure.

Core Volunteer Activities

Companionship & Emotional Support

  • Provide friendly visits to reduce loneliness and isolation
  • Engage in conversation, reading, or shared activities (e.g., watching movies)
  • Offer emotional support to patients and families

Caregiver Support (Respite – Non-Clinical)

  • Stay with patients to allow caregivers time for errands or appointments
  • Provide a reassuring presence (without performing hands-on care)

Practical & Environmental Support

  • Assist with light household tasks (e.g., meal preparation, light cleaning)
  • Help with seasonal or outdoor tasks (e.g., mowing, snow removal, stacking firewood)
  • Assist with minor home safety modifications (e.g., installing grab bars, ramps)
  • Help move non-medical household items as needed

Transportation & Errands

  • Provide transportation to appointments or community activities (if applicable)
  • Assist with grocery shopping or other essential errands

Program & Community Support

  • Assist with fundraising and community outreach efforts
  • Support volunteer recruitment activities
  • Help coordinate or distribute donated items (e.g., durable medical equipment)

Qualifications:

Qualifications include good physical health, emotional maturity, sensitivity, and reliability. Volunteers must be over the age of 18. Prospective volunteers must submit to a background check. Volunteers need to have a valid driver's license and complete a pre-employment drug screening.
