Watershed Maintenance Worker (Summer ONLY)

Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

 Assists with maintaining and monitoring the lakes, ponds, and streams. Activities primarily include, but are not limited to, clearing litter, mowing shoreline areas of dams, clearing culverts, monitoring shoreline conditions, maintaining life rings and posts, assisting with goose management, and installing methods of erosion control and fisheries habitat along lake shoreline. Assists in the inspection of private boats and documentation of boat condition and covenants violations. Works with Watershed Specialist to survey lake and stream water quality at designated monitoring sites and to perform data entry. May assist in removal of invasive plants from natural areas. May assist with projects to manage drainage and erosion issues. Maintains regular and reliable attendance. Performs additional general duties as necessary.

Education & Experience: Familiarity with environmental science topics or willingness to learn is useful.

 

Computer skills: Experience with ArcGIS and Microsoft Excel is helpful, but not required.

 

Other Skills and Abilities: Must be able to swim and be willing to operate a boat or canoe. Must be comfortable working alone or as a team in the field. Must have ability to interact courteously with the public. Must have familiarity with or willing to learn to use tools and equipment that includes but is not limited to automatic transmission pick-up truck, heavy and light gas-powered yard tools, various hand tools, Jon boat with electric motor, and canoe/kayak. Must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver's license and a good driving record. Must be able to pass a drug screening prior to start date.

Employee follows established procedures and guidelines at all times.

 

Tools Equipment and Machines used: Pick-up truck, heavy and light equipment, gas powered yard tools, various hand tools.

 

Contacts: Frequent contact with RA staff, members and the public.

Work is performed outdoors either alone or as part of a small team. Close cell phone or radio contact will be maintained with watershed manager and watershed specialist. Much of the work is on and around a lake environment, comfort around the water is necessary. Proper personal protective equipment for work on boats and with tools will always be provided. Work may occur in inclement weather.
