Job Description:

Purpose:  The instructors will instruct, guide and coach Stand-Up Paddle Board (SUP) to customers on Reston lakes with attention to safety and technique. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Confirming all paddlers have registered prior to attending a session.

Completes the loading and unloading of equipment while keeping launch area organized.

Conducts a brief orientation to paddlers on land with attention to safety, technique, and equipment.

Provide guidance and coaching to class participants while on the water.

Takes photos of paddlers with supplied waterproof cameras to document both progress and fun.

Monitoring the use of equipment and properly handling and storing gear when not in use

Engaging with customers and community members in a positive and constructive manner to ensure

Works at learning level of class

Works with individual students within class structure to enable all to correct faults, improve self-image and progress in their fitness program.

Reports to class on time, prepared with materials and equipment, and dressed in appropriate attire.

Knows emergency procedures and the location of emergency equipment.

Keeps class attendance and records.

Secures qualified substitutes to be approved by supervisor well in advance and provides substitutes with rosters and lesson plans.

Attends pre-session instructor meetings, staff meetings, and instructor workshops.

Maintains all personal certifications; attends workshops and recertification training.  

Prepares teaching area with necessary equipment and returns it to storage at the end of class

Participates in branch recruitment for class participants or in program promotional events.

Supports management in programming decisions.

Adheres to all RA Group Programming policies and procedures.

Performs related duties as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:  No supervisory responsibility

Minimum Qualifications:

Education – High School Diploma or GED, Must be 18 years of age.

Computer Skills - To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Certificates and Licenses - Requires First Aid, CPR certification or equivalent.  American Canoe Association of World Paddle Association (WPA) Certifications for SUP.

Other Skills and Abilities – minimum of one year teaching experience, must display an outgoing personality, good customer service, demonstrates interest in working with individuals as well as groups of people.  Responsible for the leading multiple group fitness classes that range in variety and levels from Yoga to Hip Hop. This includes counting, cueing, organizing choreography, etc.   Ability to thrive in an environment that values high expectations, accountability, and balanced lifestyles.

Work Environment / Conditions:  Able to teach/work several hours outdoors and on your feet with possible off hours evenings and weekends.
