Job Description:
Purpose:   The CIT Mentor oversees the day to day operation of the camp including staff scheduling, supervising camp staff, is responsible for program quality, adherence to relevant policies and procedures and state licensing guidelines, risk management and mitigation, parent concerns and complaints, daily program planning and scheduling, and coordination of expenditures within outlined camp budgets.   Work is performed under the general supervision of the Recreation Manager.                                      

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

1.    Oversees camp enrollment of 12 children/per session with ages ranging from 14-16.

2.    Leads by example and is a positive role model for all campers and peers.

3.    Organizes, coordinates, and leads ongoing training for campers.  Evaluates quality of instruction and activities.  Creates and manages daily schedules. 

 

4.    Assists with pre-camp planning by developing activities that give children the opportunity to participate in activities that are both recreational and educational.  Manages overall program content and structure.

5.    Communicates with parents/guardians, RA staff, and community partners prior to and throughout the summer.

6.    Monitors the health and safety of all campers and staff.  Follows all VA State Licensing requirements.  Dispenses medications and keeps all related records.

7.    Uses group management skills to engage all children in daily activities.

8.    Manages budget and systems for ordering, purchasing, and storing supplies.

9.    Works closely with Transportation Coordinator and Recreation Supervisor.

10.  Helps children and staff resolve conflicts appropriately.  Intervenes if children are having behavior issues.

Education and Experience – Must be 21 years of age and possess high school diploma; enrolled in college w/ a preferred major in Education, Child Development; or other prior camp experience.

 

Computer Skills – Basic computer knowledge, including Microsoft Office and ADP.

 

Other Skills and Abilities – Prior supervisory experience, excellent organizational ability and effective communication skills.  Experience preferred in nature, recreational games, science, sports, art, aquatics, technology, and songs/music.

 

Other Qualifications Current CPR and First Aid Certification; Medication Administration Training (preferred); Healthcare Screening; documentation of physical examination and TB skin test; clean driving record; clear the local jurisdiction requirements for criminal background and fingerprinting; must meet the county/state licensing requirements; must have the critical skill of being able to relate to parents and children and have a positive, creative attitude; must be able to work as a team member; must be able to effectively communicate with children and parents; must understand RA’s mission and vision, and be committed to working with diverse population. 

 

Decision-Making & Independence Exercised:   Describes the level of authority and/or responsibility to make decisions, develop and revise policies & procedures, make official commitments on behalf of the Association, etc.

 

Employee follows established policies and procedures; formulates, interprets, or implements management policies or operating practices as required with regard to office operations and job responsibilities; exercises initiative, independent judgment and advanced administrative skills and represents the Association before public audiences as a spokesperson, or in handling complaints, arbitrating disputes or resolving grievances with regard to office operations and job duties/tasks as required.

 

Tools, Equipment & Machines Used: - Computers, iPads, printer, copy machine, and general office equipment.  Ability to operate 15 passenger vans.

 

Contacts:  - Frequent contact with Association members and other visitors for the purpose of providing or exchanging information.

This job is performed in an indoor/outdoor school age children’s setting.  Requires working in all weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment can become raised. Must be able to work scheduled hours.
