Job Description:

The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management is recruiting 2 Wildlife Technicians for the Casper Field Office, located in Casper, WY. The selected candidates will  assist the Field Office Wildlife Biologists in performing surveys for multiple sensitive species, maintenance to wildlife habitat structures, and public outreach and engagement activities.

Duties Include:

·         Rangeland Health Monitoring - Reading transects, identifying native and invasive plants, identifying wildlife signs, and browse status

·         Invasive Species Monitoring (Cheatgrass) - Reading transects, identifying cheatgrass, identifying native and invasive plants

·         Raptor Nesting Surveys - Visiting Artificial Nesting Structures, and nests throughout the field office

·         Data Management/ Report Compilation

·         Project inventory and maintenance - Wildlife guzzlers, wildlife friendly fences, fence markers, fence strikes, bird ramps, bat boxes

·         ArcPro  - Updating data and working with databases

·         Ute ladies-tresses (T&E Plant) Surveys - Identifying plant, population surveys

·         Cross Training - Opportunities to help and learn from Range, Hydrology, Recreation, and Archeology

This position will require you to spend approximately 70 percent of your time working in the field, with moderate to strenuous physical activity.  Field work may occur under all environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold and working in remote rugged locations.  We will be driving off-road and/or 4-wheel drive vehicles to and from field sites and training can be provided as needed. Rattlesnakes are prevalent in the area as are ticks. Terrain can be rough in many places, and weather can vary and change quickly.


Contract Timeline:
• 16-week appointment beginning in May 2024, pending successful completion and passage of federal background check prior to start date;
• Full-time (40 hrs/wk)

Location:
Based in Casper, WY, in the vicinity of Casper Mountain and southern Big Horns. The Casper Field Office manages 1,326,733 million acres of public land for diverse resources and uses, including National Historic Trails , rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking and livestock grazing.

Compensation and Benefits:
• Wage: $18.75/hr.
• Medical, dental, and vision insurance available at no cost
• Candidate is responsible for obtaining housing but BLM can support in navigating housing opportunities locally.

Job Qualifications:

·         College student working towards degree in a wildlife related field, Bachelor's degree in wildlife related field, related discipline, or a combination of relevant education and field experience;

·         Enthusiasm about the position, with interest in and knowledge of basic wildlife and botany;

·         Familiarity with identifying native and invasive plants;

·         Experience with ArcGIS Pro and applications such as Field Maps;

·         Ability to safely navigate to field sites using maps/compass, Avenza, and/or handheld GPS devices;

·         Ability to complete field work in dynamic field settings;

·         Organizational skills;

·         Reliable, team-player with strong communication skills;

·         Possession of a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license; and

·         Able to pass a federal background check
