The Summer Camp Chef will lead the food service for the Great Basin Institute's Summer Exploration Camp. As a leader, the chef will prepare meals for up to a 60-person weekly summer camp in Galena Creek Regional Park (kids and staff). The park is located six miles up Mt. Rose Highway, from South Reno, situated in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Carson Ranger District. The Chef will be working in the modest commercial kitchen, inside the Camp WeChMe Lodge, the main site for Summer Camp. The Camp Chef will be asked to grill, barbecue, be creative, using various grills, prepare sack lunches on days kids leave the park site; of course, the Chef is invited to all off-site field trips! Position schedule is generally Monday through Friday, however, shopping/prepping for the next camp week may fall on a weekend day. Strong candidates will have schedule flexibility and be strongly considered.

This is a contract position with a designated start and end date.
This position starts: Monday, June 10th and end on Friday, August 9th, 2024. There will be a one-week break from camp, July 8th - 12th.

Duties:

1. Plan menus for generally 60, but possibly up to 85 children and adults weekly;
2. Shop for and purchase ingredients;
3. Prepare a fun menu of nutritional meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner;
4. Maintain the kitchen and utensils in a clean, professional manner;
5. Coordinate with the Program Manager and Education Coordinator on menu plans, shopping, meal times and preparation.


Contract Timeline:
Monday, June 10th through Friday, August 9th. Generally Monday through Friday, approximately 40 hours per week. Schedule may be subject to change depending on applicant and employer needs.

Location:
Galena Creek Recreation Area, six miles up Mt. Rose Highway from South Reno. Food is prepared in a professional kitchen at the Washoe County Park Camp WeChMe Lodge facility.

Compensation and Benefits:
The chef is hired on a contract basis and qualified candidates will receive $1,000 per week (before taxes). Contract is 8 weeks total.

Job Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • Professional kitchen certification, ServSafe, is required. GBI may cover the certification fee if necessary;
  • Experience in cooking for at least 65 people at a meal is required;
  • Motivated, self-starter who is detail oriented;
  • Flexibility to handle competing and changing priorities;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse public in a variety of forums;
  • Ability to meet Washoe County Health Department kitchen and food standards;
  • Have an interest in working in nature and can make a tasty s'more!

Other Job Information:
