Senior Mechanical Engineer
LocationHampton, New Hampshire

Job Responsibilities

We seek a skilled and innovative Mechanical Engineer to join our accomplished staff of engineers and technicians. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in mechanical, thermal, and fluid dynamics fundamentals and be experienced with computer-aided solid modeling and numerical analyses using commercial software such as SolidWorks and Ansys, as well as open-source software to complement hand calculations and sound physical reasoning.  Working effectively with colleagues, identification of technical risks early in a design effort along with possible solutions and supporting analyses are essential skills needed to succeed.

Work and Surrounding Environment:

  • Variety. A research, design, and development company engaged in several projects at any given time related to design and development of gas turbine engines, turbine gensets, compact high-temperature heat exchangers, and high-speed generators.
  • Technical Challenge. Turbomachinery operating at high temperatures, high speeds, high pressures. Compact, high temperature, heat exchangers needing to survive fast thermal cycles. Low emissions combustors. Creep, fatigue, and oxidation at extreme temperatures.
  • Talented and Creative Colleagues. Team with other creative Engineers and highly capable support staff (Designers/Drafters, Mechanical and Electrical Technicians, Precision Machinists). Project teams are small, interdisciplinary, and collaborative.
  • New England Seacoast. Located in Hampton on the New Hampshire seacoast near beaches, with short drives to all the restaurants and shops in Portsmouth and Exeter, and 50 minutes to Boston. Additionally, NH has no sales or income taxes.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop mechanical systems and components using SolidWorks CAD, FEA, spreadsheet/hand calculations, and bespoke engineering models.
  • Analyze schematics and engineering drawings to ensure compliance with design requirements within established constraints.
  • Conduct root cause analysis to troubleshoot mechanical issues and implement effective solutions.
  • Collaborate within project teams to efficiently and effectively execute plans.

Desired skills:

  • Computer-aided solid modeling of structures and fluid boundaries using CAD software. (SolidWorks)
  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of fluid and thermal systems. (Ansys Fluent and CFX, SolidWorks Flow Simulation)
  • Finite-element analysis (FEA) for thermal, structural, and lifetime analyses. (Ansys Mechanical, SolidWorks Simulation)
  • Engineering calculations: handbook, spreadsheet-based, EES, Python, or other programming platform to check/verify numerical calculations or efficient estimations
  • Rigorous root cause problem-solving analysis
  • Excellent oral and written communication for collaboration with colleagues and clients, documentation of work products, and proposals for new work
Professional Requirements

Required qualifications:

  • Minimum BSME, MSME preferred, or like degrees in a related field.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD modeling and FEA. Proficiency with CFD or other engineering analysis software is a plus.
  • A strong fundamental knowledge of mechanical engineering subjects – static structures, vibrations, materials and failure mechanisms, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer.
  • Familiarity with techno-economics analysis, project scheduling, tools and techniques.
