Summary:

Under the direction of the Finance Manager, this position will perform accounting and financial functions according to established policies and procedures.  The Project Accountant will assist with audit preparation and various reconciliations that need to be completed for Chugachmiut tribal accounting services.


Major Responsibilities:
  • Understand and enforce Chugachmiut’s accounting policies and procedures.  Request recommended changes/improvements to the accounting policies and procedures if needed to the Finance Division Director when necessary.
  • Report discrepancies, non-compliance, and/or other potential unethical practices immediately to supervisor.
  • Assist with projects such as but not limited to the Chugachmiut Tribal Accounting services program and adhere to the requirements of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Financial Guidance for Chugachmiut Tribal Accounting Services. Provide financial guidance and assistance to Tribal Councils.
  • Assist and provide guidance to Tribes with cash, investments, and credit card reconciliations.
  • Assist and provide guidance to Tribes with payroll reconciliations which includes payroll liability accounts, quarterly 941s, quarterly ESC, and W-2s.
  • Assist and provide guidance to Tribes with vendor statement reconciliations which includes annual 1096, 1099, and accounts payable aging report for accuracy.
  • Assist and provide guidance to Tribes with grant reconciliations which includes maintaining accurate grant receivable or unearned revenue balances.
  • Assist and provide guidance to Tribes with year-end audit preparation which includes document requests prepared by client from auditor.
  • Provides back-up support for the Staff Accountant to prepare required external grant fiscal reports.
  • Provides back-up support for the Staff Accountant to perform draw downs on reimbursable grants on a bi-weekly basis to maintain cash for operations.
  • Prepares and enters journal entries for approval.
  • Assists with audit preparation and year end close for the annual financial statement and single audits for state and federal programs.
  • Provide technical support to the service region when requested.
  • Conforms to Chugachmiut policies and HIPAA regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Education Requirements:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in accounting. 
  •  Two to three years non-profit accounting experience required. 

Hours of Work:

The hours of work are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with one hour for lunch. This is a temporary position. Chugachmiut maintains a drug/alcohol non-smoking work environment.
