Summary:

This position works collaboratively with the Behavioral Health Quality Assurance Manager, other workers within Health Services, and the Billing Department staff to provide comprehensive clinical support for scheduling encounters, helping clinical staff with documenting, and charting reviews for behavioral health services.

The Behavioral Health Cerner Specialist ensures that all client encounters, scheduling, and documentation charting meets the highest standards of confidentiality, accuracy and professionalism.


Major Responsibilities:

A Behavioral Health Cerner Specialist works to support Behavioral Health clinical team members in completing scheduling, charting, documentation, and, ultimately, billing processes.  Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Assist clinical staff in scheduling, encounter management, and any necessary documentation in the Cerner system of Electronic Health Record management.
  2. Train clinical staff in the Cerner system of Electronic Health Record management in formalized trainings and during the day “on-the-fly” situations as staff encounter “glitches” or unfamiliar error messages with the intent of teaching proficiency.
  3. Assist staff in entering appointments and complete the Cerner requirements when staff lack connectivity or encounter insurmountable issues. Assist in the transfer of data from AKAIMS when and where indicated.
  4. Provide culturally appropriate feedback on changes in data entry practices, alerting clinical supervisors and concerned clinical staff.
  5. Monitor charting, scheduling, and service delivery, and report trouble areas to clinical supervisors.
  1. Provide periodic feedback to individual counselors and clinical supervisors as to the status of client charts, those requiring closure/discharge, and those requiring reviews of specific elements.
  2. Be knowledgeable in and able to provide assistance with best practices using technological tools (including both Cerner and AKAIMS).
  3. Provide updates to documentation such as Intake Packets, Transition Plans, Discharge Summaries, etc. in order to keep them current and compliant with Cerner requirements.
  4. Fill in minor gaps and notify primary staff members regarding any assistance that has been given in charting.
  5. With the assistance of the QA Manager, review “super bills” for accuracy before they are forwarded for reimbursement through the Billing Department.
  6. Participate in weekly Clinical Meetings to give suggestions and feedback on documentation, Cerner updates, and QA matters.
  7. Assist the Behavioral Health Department in preparations and onsite accreditation reviews.
  8. Prepare and maintain confidential records and reports and adhere to governmental and organizational confidential policies at all times.
  9. Attend Cerner, AKAIMS, and Department of Behavioral Health meetings to stay up to date on current changes and practices.
  10. Other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements:
  • A minimum of a high school diploma or GED plus experience working with both Behavioral Health entry and scheduling.  A bachelor’s degree in counseling, social work, or a related field is preferred.
  • Two years’ work progressive experience that clearly demonstrates the ability to navigate the Cerner software and accomplish the essential duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Experience with or ability to quickly learn the State of Alaska Behavioral Health Electronic Health Record system, AKAIMS.

Hours of Work:
Hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with an hour for lunch. This is a full-time position working 37.5 hours per week and 1950 hours per year. Chugachmiut maintains a drug/alcohol free and non-smoking environment.
