Bilingual WIC Public Health Assistant

Under the guidance of the WIC Coordinator, performs basic screening procedures for WIC clinic clients as assigned.

Primary Functions:
1. Maintains an effective working relationship with clinic staff and establishes a non-judgmental rapport with WIC clients.
2. Greets clients and assesses reason for appointment and/or need to reschedule.
3. Retrieves and prepares client records for WIC appointments for clinic.
4. Conducts client intake interview verifying demographics, obtaining client signature on appropriate consents and preparing client record for services to be received.
5. Explains clinic procedures and client rights and responsibilities.
6. Gives client specific forms to complete and/or educational materials to review for the services to be received.
7. Prepares physical set-up of clinics; cleans up after clinic, and restocks/straightens medical supplies as indicated.
8. Completes, records, and graphs client's length/height, weight and head circumference per IDPH Nutrition Assessment Manual.
9. Completes and records client's hemoglobin and lead per applicable IDPH and VNA Health Center procedures.
10. Completes applicable laboratory requisitions and logs for tests completed.
11. Prepares laboratory specimens for pick-up or mailing per applicable IDPH and VNA procedures.
12. Directs client or parent/guardian in completion of clinic forms as applicable.
13. Notifies Nutritionist of problems or alterations in client status.
14. Answers, assesses and screens telephone calls.
15. Bilingual PHA will interpret for clients and staff as needed.
16. Respects client’s privacy and rights, and maintains client confidentiality.
17. Maintains office and printing supplies and prepares requisitions needed for supplies and storing when received.
18. Understands and applies VNA Health Center Infection Control Procedures.


1. Maintains CPR certification.
2. High school diploma or equivalent, some office technology courses desirable.
3. Minimum of one year customer service experience preferred.
4. Effective communication skills, including neat and legible hand writing/printing.
5. Ability to alphabetize and add/subtract/divide/multiply as necessary.
6. Bi-lingual in Spanish/English as follows: Reading - Required. Written – Preferred. Speaking – Required. This position requires phone calls to Spanish speaking clients, distribution of Spanish language materials to clients, etc. Will serve as receptionist for WIC on rotating basis. Will read patient rights at registration. Will conduct nutrition-related health assessments. May be required to translate materials and messages from one language to another. Will be required to interpret nutrition assessment and counseling sessions and nutrition education groups.
7. Computer literate.

Essential Functions/Physical Requirements:
1. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
2. Tactile, visual and olfactory senses intact.
3. Manual dexterity sufficient to perform primary functions of CNA.
4. Ability to deal with high levels of stress.
5. Ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
