Breast Feeding Peer Counselor

Description:

To provide breastfeeding information and support.


Primary Functions:
  1. Promote breastfeeding for women participating in WIC during pregnancy and post-partum.
  2. Answer basic questions about breastfeeding and provide advanced counseling as trained on the job.
  3. Conduct individual and group breastfeeding promotion and support.
  4. Support and encourage women who have chosen to breastfeed.
  5. Document clinical concerns and refer to appropriate staff.
  6. Document group sessions or individual interactions on appropriate forms. Make referrals of clients wanting peer counselor follow-up to program staff.
  7. Respect client confidentiality.
  8. Participate in appropriate continuing education.
  9. Build rapport with other clinic personnel and strive to become an active team player within the clinic.

Qualifications
  1. Provide proof of completion of breastfeeding peer counselor training within 6 months of hire.
  2. Must be willing to attend breastfeeding counselor training within 6 months of hire.
  3. Must be enthusiastic, optimistic and not easily discouraged.
  4. Long term breastfeeding experience (min. 4 months) with little or no formula preferred.
  5. High School diploma or GED required.
  6. Not all Breastfeeding Peer Counselor positions are bi-lingual. However, for those positions that do require this: bi-lingual in Spanish/English as follows: Reading - Required. Written – Preferred. Speaking – Required.  This person will teach classes in multiple languages. Phone calls and breast feeding assessments in clients’ language of preference.

Essential Functions/Physical Requirements:
1. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
2. Tactile, visual, and olfactory senses intact.
3. Manual dexterity efficient to perform procedures, (i.e. Hgb, Ht, Wt) and operate a computer.
4. Ability to deal with high levels of stress.
