The Doula position is a trained birth assistant who provides physical and emotional support during the woman’s third trimester, during labor, and postpartum. The Doula works collaboratively with the Family Support Worker to ensure quality, comprehensive care.

Primary Functions:
  1. Responsible for attending a minimum of births a year determined by grant. Supports mother and her support team during labor and delivery.
  2. Maintains regular contact with clients in their home, at prenatal appointments, and in the hospital.
  3. Develops a birth plan, prenatal activities, and educational objectives with the family.
  4. Prepares family for the labor and delivery; teaches breathing exercises and other comfort measures.
  5. Organizes and facilitates prenatal groups.
  6. Assists with strengthening the parent-child relationship.
  7. Aids in making and attending of health care appointments as well as other organization visits in the community.
  8. Assists with community outreach efforts, targeting local hospitals and medical staff.
  9. Acts as an advocate for client; explains medical procedures.
  10. Assists parents with infant feeding and basic infant care postpartum.
  11. Attends to the needs of the client outside of office hours as required, whether in the home or in the hospital.
  12. Completes all required doula trainings, including CB-FANA and DONA certification.
  13. Assist and participate in fundraising activities.
  14. Familiarizes and complies with all VNA policies and procedures.
  15. Meets standards of behavior expectations.
  16. Follows established guidelines for use and/or disclosure of protected health information. Employees should report any breaches of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) rules to the Privacy Officer immediately. Failure to comply with HIPAA policies and procedures will result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
  17. Other duties as assigned.

  1. High School Diploma required.
  2. Maturity and experience in successfully working with infants and young children/parents.
  3. Demonstrates motivation and ability to learn and apply basic parenting skills.
  4. Communication skills that convey empathy, and provide comfort through touch, words, and actions.
  5. Available to participate after hours on an “on-call” basis.
  6. Creative/knowledgeable about community resources.
  7. Non-judgmental
  8. Culturally competent.
  9. Some computer skills required.
  10. Demonstrates good writing and organizational skills.
  11. Strong interpersonal skills/ability to relate to people.
  12. Bi-lingual in Spanish/English as follows: Reading - Required. Written – Required. Speaking – Required.  This position requires telephone and in-person spoken Spanish, and the ability to read and write in Spanish.

  14. Valid Drivers License and automobile insurance. 

Essential Functions/Physical Requirements:
1. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
2. Ability to drive a car. (Ability to drive a car entails driving to client’s homes in Aurora/Southern Kane County area; does not involve transportation of clients, which is not allowed per program guidelines).
3. Must maintain current driver’s license and automobile insurance.
4. Ability to climb stairs and ambulate in and out of client’s homes in all weather.
5. Ability to deal with high levels of stress.
6. Able to sit and stand for long periods.
